The History of Cyprus

Cyprus is a Mediterranean island with a rich history, one that few other places are able to match from the Romans to the Crusaders, being in the pathway to three such large nations. The history is so long on this island that it dates back to prehistoric times that includes King Cinyas Teucer for one. However the better known is the Cypriot sculptor Pygmalion, the sculptor who is said to have carved a woman from ivory and in Ovid’s Metamorphoses X he was portrayed as the sculptor who fell in love with his lady of ivory. The legend goes that Pygmalion gave his statue presents and prayed to Venus. Venus took pity on him and brought the ivory lady to life, which he then marries and has two daughters with her.

Adonis was also a part of the mythology of Cyprus as well as Aphrodite where Cyprus was said to be this Greek Goddess birthplace, the goddess of beauty and love. She was said to be the daughter of Zeus and Dione and found at the Nicosia Museum in Cyprus is a statue of Aphrodite that has an approximate date of ca. 100 BC. and of Roman origin. This is not the only birth of Aphrodite, it is also said that she rose from the foam of sea near Paphos Cyprus. Those who worshipped Aphrodite did so on the southwestern coast of Cyprus as Paphos.

The baths of Aphrodite are sure to appeal to many that visit the beautiful area.  Legend has it that Aphrodite would bathe with Adonis, her lover.  It is also said that anyone who bathes in the waters of the baths, then you will have found the blessing for eternal youth, as well as eternal beauty.  It would not be very wise to be caught bathing in these waters however.
